Having recently brought home a new baby I'm struck with how fast and precious this time in our lives is. I love when I get to make images of this time for a family. As a Connecticut newborn photographer I have a bit of a different approach. I spend time with your family, in you home, after your baby arrives. I don't offer a lot of direction. I make pictures of you and your family as you are, as you hold your new baby, as you nurse your new baby, as older siblings get involved. There is this relaxed, hazy atmosphere in a postpartum household. A dreaminess that comes from lack of sleep, joy, the smell of a new baby, and the feel of crisp, teeny diapers. I remember I cried when my husband went back to work this time (I bet I cried last time too). But this time I was mourning the end of such a beautiful time together as a family. It is so brief and special, what better way to commemorate it than with a relaxed and natural photography session.
I photographed this family earlier in the year, right after I had found out I was pregnant. I was worried about how I would make things work with two children. It was meaningful to me to see Sylvia loving and caring for both kids, as well as how excited her daughter was about the new baby. Throughout my pregnancy I would file these little glimpses into how moms make it work away as inspiration. They reminded me of my own little family when they started rough housing on the bed, their older daughter squealing with laughter.
It is these little moments that I want to treasure in my own life and so these are the pictures I want to make for my clients. I want to take the small, every day moments, that will be so meaningful for your family to remember, and turn them into art that you can put on your wall or on your coffee table to share with family and friends for years to come.
